Mindful Parenting is a contemplative practice through which we become more mindful of our children and, in doing so, experience a more joyful life.
The Morning Sip: Judging Others; Is Your
Child Being Judged?
Yesterday's "The Morning Cup," contained
a typographical error. Perhaps you caught it. If you did,
you may have realized the intended word and glossed over it.
Or, perhaps, you formed a judgment of some sort.
We have
a tendency to form judgments of others a lot of the time. While
forming judgments, and then mulling them over, it is very difficult to
be mindful. Our thinking mind is in full gear.
That's our
nature. But, if we gain insight into our judging-ness,
we can use it as a tool for mindful parenting. This particular
tool can be especially powerful because so often we will not
be with our child at the time. The awareness will bring our
thoughts to our beautiful child.
Aware that I am judging another
I wonder whether my child
Is being judged at this moment
Much of the time we will not be
aware that we are judging another. But, if we try make
an effort to be more attentive, we will begin to gain awareness.
This verse not only brings our awareness to our child, wherever they
may be, but also introduces an element of the heart -- it can be painful
to think of our child being judged by another.
Make an effort
today to be more aware of when your judging mind is at work.
Breathe deeply as you recite the verse. Try to let the
inner mind do the work. No thinking is necessary.
The Mindful Parent is an organization devoted to sharing with
parents and other child caregivers ways in which to enhance the many
joys of parenting. By mindfully attending to our children, both
when we are physically present with them and when we are physically
separated from them, we can enhance our sense of connection to them
and, in turn, our connection to the cosmos. This makes us a
better parent, a happier person, and a more vital human being.
To
facilitate a more mindful approach to parenting, The Mindful Parent
publishes on its website, and in its bi-weekly
newsletter, mindful
parenting
verses and commentaries. The Mindful Parent website
also serves as a community forum that encourages and supports a mindful
parenting dialogue and the sharing of mindful parenting experiences.
In
the spirit of developing a mindful parenting community, we encourage
you to
submit a mindful parenting experience through verse,
commentary, and imagery to share with others. We believe that
through our collective experience, we can help each other develop
a deeper and more meaningful mindful parenting practice.
