The Morning Sip: Sit Still And Find Your Child In The Cosmos

The joyfulness to arise out of the practice of mindful parenting is the product of a lifelong endeavor.  With every passing day lived mindfully, seeds of joyfulness are nourished.  Better said, with every passing moment lived mindfully, seeds of joyfulness are nourished.  And when we are aware that these seeds have sprouted, we delight in continuing to water and nourish them.

When we shine the light of mindfulness on our child, not only do we penetrate more deeply into their being and see them as who they really are, but we open our hearts to feel greater joy through greater connection.

Can you feel the feeling?  Recite this verse sometime today:

          Where in the cosmos
          Is my child?

As you recite this verse, think big.  Visualize or sense the enormity of the cosmos -- galaxies and solar systems and, somewhere amid the vastness, our sun, and within our solar system, Earth.  Keeping in mind the broad perspective, drop down through the clouds circling in the Earth's atmosphere to mountains tops and then to trees and then to people.  People, as it has been for millions of years, are born and die, and somewhere amid it all is your child.

This verse can help ground you in awareness of your child's existence.

Breathe deeply and sit still.  Your child exists in a place truer than their bedroom, or in college, or watching television or doing homework.  Sit still and sense that place.

The Mindful Parent is an organization devoted to sharing with parents and other child caregivers ways in which to enhance the many joys of parenting.  By mindfully attending to our children, both when we are physically present with them and when we are physically separated from them, we can enhance our sense of connection to them and, in turn, our connection to the cosmos.  This makes us a better parent, a happier person, and a more vital human being.

To facilitate a more mindful approach to parenting, The Mindful Parent publishes on its website, and in its bi-weekly newsletter, mindful parenting verses and commentaries.  The Mindful Parent website also serves as a community forum that encourages and supports a mindful parenting dialogue and the sharing of mindful parenting experiences.

In the spirit of developing a mindful parenting community, we encourage you to submit a mindful parenting experience through verse, commentary, and imagery to share with others.  We believe that through our collective experience, we can help each other develop a deeper and more meaningful mindful parenting practice. Click here to learn more about making a submssion.  We thank everyone who has contributed or is considering making this very compassionate contribution.
