Mindful Parenting is a contemplative practice through which we become more mindful of our children and, in doing so, experience a more joyful life.
The Daily Sip: Sing A Song
About Your Child
When
was the last time you sang a song you made up with your child?
It may be time to do it again!
Singing is an act that naturally comes
from deep inside of us. Unless we are feeling self-conscious
at the time, when we sing, our awareness expands.
When we sing with our child, we connect with them with expanded awareness.
Today,
start singing spontaneously when you are with your child. Make
it a song about them. Use their name at the very beginning.
Make it up as you go. Don't think about it as you are doing
it. (Don't worry if it's not good enough . . . .)
Invite your
child to join you. Invite them to make up the next line.
You can feel great joy and wonder during this deep, creative, and
soulful exchange.
Depending upon the age of your child and a
variety of other factors, it may not be so easy to
engage your child. That's okay. You're doing this for
yourself!
So, whether or not you are with your child, sometime today
start singing a song about your child. Let the lyrics surprise
you they flow from your throat. Do it in a place where you can
"Sing out loud" and "Sing out strong."
And while singing, reflect
on your child today and your child as a toddler -- that wonderful
time when your child was first learning to sing songs.

The
Mindful Parent is an organization devoted to sharing with parents
and other child caregivers ways in which to enhance the many joys
of parenting. By mindfully attending to our children, both when
we are physically present with them and when we are physically separated
from them, we can enhance our sense of connection to them and, in
turn, our connection to the cosmos. This makes us a better parent,
a happier person, and a more vital human being.
To facilitate
a more mindful approach to parenting, The Mindful Parent publishes
on its website, and in its bi-weekly
newsletter, mindful parenting
verses
and commentaries. The Mindful Parent website also serves as
a community forum that encourages and supports a mindful parenting
dialogue and the sharing of mindful parenting experiences.
In
the spirit of developing a mindful parenting community, we encourage
you to
submit a mindful parenting experience through verse,
commentary, and imagery to share with others. We believe that
through our collective experience, we can help each other develop
a deeper and more meaningful mindful parenting practice.
